Yes, small percentages in the "fit to page" setting has to compress the timeline to fit it all to the page. I believe it compresses each column date and when it goes too small it omits the grayshade.
In print preview are you viewing every day or do you have the timescale compressed in an attempt to fit more of the Gantt Chart in the view? Are you printing to a PDF printer or to a regular printer? Does this occur on all projects or just one?

Here is a photo of the printed page the camera on my phone washed out the image - it is accurately reproducing the colours : I've tried converting Spot colours to Process in case the printer was experiencing some issue with the Pantone colours, but the colours are actually printing fine, it seems to be the placed file and the shadow causing issues.

No - admittedly I don't know much about the different printing and PDF formats. The problem is that since it printed out fine, there has been a Widows update, Rhino update and GFX drivers update.
