Message 2 of 9. Message 3 of 9. I make it sound so scary I may get skewered for this but I would avoid using "Attach". I'm sure someone can prove me wrong but I would not use "ATTACH" unless I was absolutely sure of the consequences I create a template with relative path, overlay empty xrefs. Thank you Joseph D. Bouza, P. Message 4 of 9. Thanks for the replies Joe, I had been using Attach in the past but over the last few projects the XREFS did seem to get a bit out of control with circular references messages, hence the original question.

Message 5 of 9. Joe, I too believe Attach can lead to trouble. Message 6 of 9. When we are working in our drawing, sometimes we need to use other drawing as reference. For example, the architect want to see how their building plan would fit the site design.

Then the architect should use overlaid xref. So when the structural engineers use the architect drawing as reference, they will only see the architect drawing. They will not see the site design, even the architect use the site drawing as reference. Attached means it becomes a part of your drawing. When you use attached xref , then anyone who use your file as attachment will see the drawing too.

In this Article Attached xrefs An attached Xref is fully attached to the base drawing and will carry through as that drawing is then referenced into other drawings. For Example: We have a circle drawing, and a rectangle drawing, both Xref'ed into a base drawing called Nest.

The Circle is attached , and the Rectangle is Overlayed. They both display and behave the same way within Nest 1. The display changes only when Nest1 is then Xrefed into a new drawing, say Nest2.

In the drawing Nest2, Nest 1 will show only the circle , and the Circle. The Rectangle is just an overlay, so it does not carry through with Nest1 into Nest2. Similarly, it does not matter if Nest1 is Xreffed in as an attachment, or an overlay.
